Additional Information
In response to the release of the Darfur scorecard, Sen. Reid said: “The situation in Darfur is one of the most pressing humanitarian and security issues facing the world today. After World War II, we promised ‘never again.’ Unfortunately, it is happening again. The Congress and the Bush Administration were right to label the atrocities in Sudan as genocide, but now it is time for action. The United States must continue to play a leadership role to ensure there is a lasting peace in Darfur, one that prevents the further loss of innocent civilian life. As the Senate Democratic Leader, I will do all I can to intensify our efforts to bring the genocide in Darfur to an end.”
Sen. Reid supported the efforts of senators, like Sens. Biden and Menendez, as they’ve tackled this issue.
On May 25, 2006, he wrote a letter (PDF) to President Bush urging him to appoint a special envoy to Darfur.
On June 10, 2006, he wrote a letter (PDF) to Sec. Condoleezza Rice urging implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement.
Notes
Contact Harry Reid
Harry Reid has received a cumulative grade of “B” for co-sponsoring and voting in favor of most Darfur legislation, but not being a champion of the cause. We need more consistent support from this senator in order to protect the people in Darfur. Genocide cannot be a one-time issue for Harry Reid — it must always be at the top of the senator’s agenda.
Thank Harry Reid for the efforts to end genocide in Darfur — but that you expect more. Urge a more proactive role in ending genocide. We need the senator’s efforts now more than ever.
