Trip to Darfur
Sen. Sam Brownback has been on a congressional visit to Darfur.
Extra Credit
Sen. Brownback received extra-credit for co-sponsoring S.1563, the Sudan Disclosure and Enforcement Act.
In 2006, Sen. Brownback co-sponsored a $60 million amendment allocated toward helping establish a UN peacekeeping force in the region. The money was part of a $94.5 billion emergency spending bill to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and aid to Gulf Coast hurricane victims.
Additional Information
In response to the release of the Darfur scorecard, Sen. Brownback said: “The Genocide Intervention Network’s scorecards will keep the pressure on Congress, reminding them that while progress has been made, more needs to be done. Although the Senate took action this year to address the genocide taking place in Darfur, as many as 2 million people remain displaced and up to 5,000 people die each month from violence.”
On November 29, 2006 the Kansas City Star announced that Senator Brownback had divested his family's mutual funds from companies that contribute to the genocide by conducting business with the government of Sudan.
On December 26, 2005, Sen. Brownback co-authored a column in The Washington Post with Sen. Obama, “Policy Adrift on Darfur.”
On April 28, 2006, he participated in a press conference on Darfur with George Clooney and Sen. Obama.
On February 16, 2006, Sen. Brownback appeared on “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer” to talk about Darfur.
